CIT Bank vs Marcus: how a $5,000 balance line changes the answer
CIT Bank runs more than one savings account, and its top rate depends on your balance. We checked CIT and Marcus on November 3, 2026 and worked through what each earns at four balances.
Our take (checked Nov 2026)
The answer depends on which CIT account you mean. CIT Bank Platinum Savings showed 3.75% APY, but only on balances of $5,000 or more. Below $5,000 the whole balance earns 0.25%. CIT Savings Connect showed 3.65% on all balances. Marcus showed 3.50%. If you hold $5,000 or more and will keep it there, Platinum earns the most of the three. If your balance is smaller or moves around, Savings Connect or Marcus is the safer fit, and Savings Connect pays slightly more than Marcus today. The one clear mistake is opening Platinum with $4,000: it would earn about $10 a year, against about $140 at Marcus. CIT also needs $100 to open an account, while Marcus lists no minimum deposit. All rates are variable.

First, which CIT account?
CIT Bank is a division of First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company. It lists four savings accounts: Platinum Savings, Savings Connect, a Money Market account and Savings Builder [4]. Money Market showed 1.55% APY and Savings Builder showed up to 1.00%, with a top rate that depends on regular deposits or a $25,000 balance [4]. Those two sit well below Marcus. The real contest is Platinum and Savings Connect against Marcus.
How the Platinum tier works
Platinum is tiered, but not the way many people assume. CIT says your entire balance earns the rate tied to your tier. At $5,000 or more, the whole balance earns 3.75%. Below $5,000, the whole balance earns 0.25% [1].
That creates a cliff. A balance of $5,000.00 earns 3.75%. A balance of $4,999.99 earns 0.25%. CIT itself notes Platinum may not be ideal if you usually keep less than $5,000 or want one flat rate [1].
Savings Connect: the flat-rate option
Savings Connect shows 3.65% from the first dollar, with no minimum balance to earn that rate. You still need $100 to open it [2]. Its disclosure says the APY is accurate as of July 1, 2026 and that rates are variable and may change without notice [2]. The page itself showed 3.65% on November 3, 2026, so treat the July date as the bank's stated reference, not as proof that the rate has been stable.
Where Marcus fits
Marcus shows 3.50% with no minimum deposit and no fees [3]. It is lower than both CIT options at the balances in our example, and it asks nothing at opening. If you want to start with a small amount, or you want to test the account before committing $100, that is a practical edge. If you would rather chase the extra 0.15 points over Savings Connect on a larger balance, CIT earns more.
A simple way to choose between them
Ask two things. First, what is the lowest your balance will drop to over the next year? If the honest answer is $5,000 or more, Platinum is worth a look. If it could fall under that line for any reason, such as a tax bill or a car repair, Savings Connect removes the risk and still pays more than Marcus today.
Second, do you want to open with nothing committed? Only Marcus lists no minimum deposit. If $100 is not an issue, that point carries little weight, and the decision comes down to the rate and the balance line.
Insurance across First-Citizens divisions
CIT says deposits at First-Citizens Bank and Trust Company and all banks that are divisions of it are not separately insured, and must be combined to see whether you pass the FDIC limit [2]. If you already bank with First Citizens, count those balances too. The FDIC says deposits are insured to at least $250,000 at each FDIC-insured bank [5]. Marcus is a Goldman Sachs Bank USA product, a separate bank [3].
Worked example
Worked example: one year of interest at four balances
Inputs
- Balances: $4,000, $5,000, $10,000 and a drop from $5,000 to $4,800
- Rates held for 12 months: Platinum 3.75% at $5,000+ and 0.25% below; Savings Connect 3.65%; Marcus 3.50%
- No deposits after the start; no taxes
- Annual interest = balance x APY, because APY includes compounding
Steps
- $4,000: Platinum $4,000 x 0.25% = $10.00. Savings Connect $4,000 x 3.65% = $146.00. Marcus $4,000 x 3.50% = $140.00.
- $5,000: Platinum $5,000 x 3.75% = $187.50. Savings Connect $182.50. Marcus $175.00.
- $10,000: Platinum $375.00. Savings Connect $365.00. Marcus $350.00.
- The cliff: if you withdraw $200 from a $5,000 Platinum balance, you hold $4,800 and the whole balance drops to 0.25%: $4,800 x 0.25% = $12.00. The same $4,800 earns $175.20 at Savings Connect and $168.00 at Marcus.
Result: At $10,000, Marcus earns $350.00, Savings Connect $365.00 and Platinum $375.00. At $4,000 or $4,800, Platinum earns $10.00 to $12.00 and is the worst of the three by far.
Platinum rewards a steady balance of $5,000 or more. A saver who dips below that line, even briefly in a given period, risks the low tier. Savings Connect trades about $10 a year per $10,000 for freedom from that line. The balance used for tier purposes is not described in the text we read, so check how and when CIT measures it.
Risks and limits
- All four rates are variable. They can change at any time without notice.
- Platinum pays only 0.25% below $5,000. We did not find how often CIT checks the balance for the tier.
- CIT requires $100 to open each account. Marcus lists no minimum deposit.
- We could not read Marcus's compounding schedule or withdrawal terms from its page text.
- FDIC cover is limited. Combine balances at First-Citizens divisions when you count.
- Interest is generally taxable. This is education, not financial or tax advice.
