Emergency Loans in 2026: What Is Published, What Is Not, and What It Costs

Only one lender here states a funding time, and it is a range of days, not hours. We compare three sources of emergency cash and show how the fee changes what lands in your account.

Our take (checked Nov 2026)

For a true short-term emergency, the lowest published cost belongs to a credit-union payday alternative loan (PAL): interest capped at 28% and an application fee of $20 or less [3]. It requires a credit union that offers it, and each credit union decides approval. If you need more than $2,000, or you cannot use a credit union, Best Egg is the only one of our three that publishes a funding window: about half of customers get money the next day, and money can arrive in one to three business days after verification [1]. Oportun publishes no timing beyond a general statement and shows a much higher example cost [2]. We do not rank these. We checked what each states on its own site on 2026-11-03. Neither borrowing online nor from a credit union can be instant or guaranteed, and a lender that promises either before you apply is a warning sign [5]. If the emergency is a bill you can negotiate, ask for a payment plan before you borrow.

What makes a loan an emergency loan?

There is no legal category called an emergency loan. The term describes a use, not a product. A personal loan, a credit-union PAL and a card cash advance can all pay for a car repair or a medical bill. So compare them on cost and timing, not on the label.

Three tests help. How much do you need? How many days can you wait? How long will you need to repay? Small and short points to a PAL. Larger and longer points to a personal loan, where fees matter more.

Credit-union PAL: lowest published cost, smallest amounts

Federal rules let a federal credit union make a PAL II loan of up to $2,000 for one to 12 months, at a rate no more than 28%, with a fee of no more than $20 [3]. There is no required membership waiting period, though a credit union may set one [3]. The loan cannot be rolled over [3].

Speed is where PALs are uncertain. The rule says nothing about how fast a credit union funds, and neither do we know of a published standard. Call before you go.

Best Egg: the only one of the three that states a funding window

Best Egg states APRs of 6.99% to 35.99%, amounts of $2,000 to $50,000 and terms of 36 to 60 months [1]. The origination fee runs 0.99% to 9.99% and is taken out of the proceeds. Loans of four years or longer carry a fee of at least 4.99% [1].

On timing the page says about half of customers get their money the next day, and that after verification money can be deposited within one to three business days [1]. That is a description of past customers and a window, not a promise for you. Best Egg says checking your rate will not affect your credit score; a hard inquiry appears only if you accept an offer [1]. It does not offer loans in Iowa, Nebraska, Vermont, West Virginia or the District of Columbia [1]. A minimum credit score is not published [1].

Oportun: smaller loans, higher cost

Oportun states amounts as low as $300 for unsecured loans and says new customers typically borrow $500 to $4,000 [2]. It also offers secured loans against a car title in eight states [2]. It says no prior credit history is required but that it requests and considers credit reports for all applicants [2]. It does not publish an APR range or a minimum credit score [2]. Its example is 35.95% APR with an administrative fee of up to 10% [2]. The page gives no funding time [2].

What about a credit card cash advance?

If you hold a card, the CFPB says a cash advance can carry a flat or percentage fee, a higher rate than purchases, and interest from the day you withdraw, with no grace period [4]. It can bridge a few days. It is expensive to carry.

The word 'instantly' should raise your guard

People search for ways to borrow money instantly. No source we checked states instant funding. Best Egg states a window of days [1]. The FTC says legitimate lenders will not promise or guarantee a loan before you apply, and an up-front fee is a cue to walk away [5]. If someone promises instant cash for a fee, stop.

Worked example

Worked example: what the fee does to a $2,000 emergency

Inputs

  • Goal: $2,000 in your bank account after the fee.
  • Best Egg fee tiers stated: 0.99%, 4.99% and 9.99% of the loan, deducted from proceeds [1].
  • Repayment: 36 monthly payments at an assumed 20% interest rate. This rate is an assumption, not a Best Egg quote. Real APR includes fees.
  • Loan needed: L = 2,000 / (1 - fee), rounded up to the cent. Payment: P = L x r / (1 - (1 + r)^-36), r = 0.20/12.
  • Oportun's own example [2]: $3,333 principal, $333 fee, 35.95% APR, borrower receives $3,000, 65 biweekly payments of $70.

Steps

  1. Fee 0.99%: L = $2,020.00 (fee $20.00). Payment $75.07. Total = 36 x $75.07 = $2,702.52. Cost above the $2,000 received = $702.52.
  2. Fee 4.99%: L = $2,105.05 (fee $105.05). Payment $78.23. Total = $2,816.28. Cost = $816.28.
  3. Fee 9.99%: L = $2,221.98 (fee $221.98). Payment $82.58. Total = $2,972.88. Cost = $972.88.
  4. Gap between the lowest and highest fee: $972.88 - $702.52 = $270.36, or $7.51 more per month ($82.58 - $75.07).
  5. Oportun example: total repaid = 65 x $70 = $4,550. Cost above the $3,000 received = $4,550 - $3,000 = $1,550, which is 51.7% of the cash received over about 30 months.

Result: On $2,000 in hand, a 9.99% fee instead of 0.99% adds about $270 over three years. Oportun's published example costs $1,550 on $3,000 received.

The advertised rate is only part of cost. The fee decides how big a loan you must take and how much interest you pay on it. Ask for the offer with the fee shown in dollars and compare total repaid against cash received. A shorter term lowers total cost but raises each payment. The 20% rate is illustrative only.

Risks and limits

  • No approval is guaranteed by any source here, and approval rules are not fully published.
  • Funding timing is not a promise. Best Egg's window is a range after verification [1]; the others publish none.
  • Fees come out of proceeds, so you receive less than the loan amount [1][2].
  • Higher-cost loans can become hard to repay. Borrow the smallest amount that solves the problem.
  • Secured loans put your car title at risk [2]. Ask what happens if you miss a payment.
  • Missed payments can hurt your credit and trigger late fees; amounts are not published on the pages we checked [1][2].

Frequently asked

What is the best emergency loan in 2026?

We do not rank. On published cost, a credit-union PAL is lowest: a 28% rate cap and a fee of $20 or less [3]. For larger amounts, compare actual offers from lenders such as Best Egg on APR, fee in dollars and payment.

Can I borrow money instantly?

We found no lender that states instant funding. Best Egg states about half of customers get money the next day and a window of one to three business days after verification [1]. Treat any instant promise as a warning sign [5].

How much can I borrow in an emergency?

It depends on the source. A PAL is capped at $2,000 [3]. Best Egg states $2,000 to $50,000 [1]. Oportun states unsecured amounts from $300 [2]. Your approved amount may be lower.

Will checking my rate hurt my credit?

Best Egg says checking your rate will not impact your score; a hard inquiry appears only if you accept an offer [1]. Oportun does not say [2].

Is a cash advance a good emergency option?

Only for very short bridges. Interest starts at once and the rate is usually higher than for purchases [4].
